News & Views from our CD

Here we are facing summer and looking forward to good riding weather. We have already had some beautiful days for riding. I only wish I could have taken advantage of them. I finally got the leaking tire pressure solved and can’t use that for an excuse anymore. Seems as though when my new rear tire was installed it didn’t seal good around the rim. But that has been repaired and now I have to find another reason or excuse for not riding. My Uncle had a theory about excuses. When someone would ask him why he didn’t make it to church he would reply ‘peanut butter’. That always brought the question ‘What did peanut butter have to do with it?’ His answer was ‘If you need an excuse, one excuse is as good as another’. I guess there is something to that. I hope I won't be making as many this summer as I have in the past. I hope you won't either. Let’s have a good safe riding summer.

Invite others to our club meetings and functions. I know we are comfortable with our little band of riders and co-riders, but let’s see if we can’t find some new faces to join in our activities. If you get the opportunity send an e-mail to Clinton Everitt (he and his son Joshua visited our meeting May). Let them know they are welcome. His e-mail address is bro.clinton@verizon.net . Let’s see if we can find some more and plan a great day trip.   I think everyone would find that enjoyable.

As the song says ‘happy trails to you until we meet again’ and be safe.

"F TROOP" RIDES AGAIN

Please visit our Scrapbook Section for more photos!

Late in March, "F Troop" headed through central Texas to view this year's crop of bluebonnets!!

Our day began at the I-Hop in Huntsville as our meeting place.  John and Janean, Pam and Frank, Howard and Ouida, and Sandra and Everett met around 8:30 a.m.  The day was partly cloudy with pleasant temperatures.  After breakfast, as we were preparing to leave for our ride we had a nice surprise!  Glenn and Janice Davis from Jasper, who had also had breakfast at I-Hop, and who had camped out near Lake Livingston, joined us for our ride in search of bluebonnets.

Our journey took us through the pine woods out of Huntsville then to Anderson.  We traveled down the Scenic Highway #390 through Independence then on 36 to Brenham.  We then went through New Ulm.  We were hoping to find a German Restaurant open near Freisburg.  But finding it closed, we continued on to Fayetteville for lunch.  After lunch we visited a Catholic Church to view paintings from the 1800's.

After touring to town on foot, our guests left in search of a good camping place for the night, and we returned back home.  We did find some bluebonnets, just not as many as in past years!  What  a beautiful day for a wonderful ride with great friends!

ffffffffff

Our meeting in April, on the second Saturday, found several of our members out of town.  However, Glen and Marilyn and George and Jean were there to greet Breeze and Walt Smith who stopped by to help us get our paperwork up to date.

ffffffffff

After our May meeting, Saturday, May 14, Frank & Pam and Sandra & Everett traveled to Wortham.  The day was cloudy but the temperature was mild and just right for a good ride.  We traveled by Lake Limestone, through Groesbeck to Northam (where we visited an antique shop) then on to Fairfield for lunch at Sam's.  After lunch we traveled to Centerville where Frank and Pam turned and headed for Crockett.  We had a good meeting that morning with Glenn & Marilyn, Olan & Regina, Frank & Pam, Sandra & Everett and had a special guest from Bryan, Clinton Everitt and his son Joshua.  Thanks for coming... Please come again!!

Motorcycles From The Past

May was Motorcycle Safety Month....  May was Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month in Texas, and DPS urged all motorcycle enthusiasts - both experienced and inexperienced- to attend a professionally taught motorcycle course to hone their skills.
"More than 700,000 people in Texas are licensed to operate a motorcycle," said Clifton Burdette, coordinator of the DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit.  "Operating a motorcycle safely requires the use of special mental and physical skills.  Riders can attain these skills by attending professionally taught motorcycle operator training courses, as well as through personal experience."
The DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit offers basic and advanced motorcycle operator training in 60 permanent locations and seven mobile sites that utilize two self-contained mobile training units.  Last year, 23,557 Texans took either the basic or advanced course.
The basic motorcycle operator training course is for unlicensed or inexperienced riders, and the advanced course if for more experienced riders.  The basic course may be used to waive the licensing road test and both of the courses may qualify for ticket dismissal and insurance discounts.
While Texas does not require all motorcycle riders to wear helmets, the DPS strongly encourages riders to wear helmets to increase safety and save lives.  Texas law states that in order to be exempt from wearing a helmet a person must be at least 21 years of age.  In addition, they must successfully complete a motorcycle safety course or be covered by a health insurance plan providing at least $10,000 in medical benefits for motorcycle-related injuries.
Information about the Motorcycle Safety Unit classes can be found on the DPS web site at www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb. For additional information on motorcycle training, call 512-424-2021 or toll-free at 1-800-292-5787.
