Sandra, Everett & Lucas... Jean, George & Cowboy....Pam & Trooper stop for a picture on our way out of town. Falling Leaves and
Cool Temperatures On
October 9, 2003, three motor coaches and six members of F-Troop, Frank
& Pam, George & Jean, Everett & Sandra, left for Durango,
Colorado to meet troop
members John & Janean, already in Colorado. With
Gold Wings and one Harley in tow our journey was enjoyable and mostly
uneventful. We arrived in
Durango on Friday evening at the Aspen Rose Park in light rain and
approaching darkness.
Next
day, our journey took us to Farmington, New Mexico, then over to Chama for
lunch, then north to La Manga pass for some beautiful color and falling
leaves. This road paralles
the Chama Railroad part of the way. What
a nice motorcycle road. The
weather was cool but the day was bright and sunny! Next
we traveled through Dolores where we stopped for breakfast at the
Ponderosa Cafe and then spent some time at the Rio Grande Southern
Railroad Museum. This is the
home of the Galloping Goose! From Dolores on to Telluride--our coldest
day-then back through Ouray and over Red Mountain Pass.
Plenty of curves and twisties, ups and downs.
Road work out of Silverton kept us in the shade of the mountain and
walking around to keep warm while waiting
to get across the mountain. Tuesday
was declared a day off for everyone!
The ladies went into Durango for some much needed shopping and the
guys worked on machines and took it easy. Our
visit to Mesa Verde National Park was next on the agenda. We all rode in two vehicles and headed out to tour the park.
We visited the cliff dwellings and ruins and enjoyed lunch in the
park.
On
the trip back home, we stopped at Canyon, Texas for the night then visited
Palo Duro Canyon the next morning. One
of the more interesting side trips was to the Panhandle Plains Historical
Museum. You can spend lots of
time here if you have it! Altogether
we road about 1000 safe miles and viewed some of the most beautiful
scenery in the world. Please visit our SCRAPBOOK section for more photos from our trip!
Safety First As
we think of safety on our touring motorcycles, we have to think about
freeway use. When traveling
on the freeways we encounter not only automobiles but also heavy trucks. I would like you to read this article by Maggie Peterson
about highway safety from the truckers point of view.
